Strong, Bold & Independent {Style Prism x The Jade Tree}

by , in
There was a time, when women used to be synonymous with delicacy, fragility, vulnerability and such.
But not any more.
Today's women stand for all things strong, dependable, independent, confident and bold.
Albeit, there still are the less privileged ones who have been unable to overcome the social stigma and the "quintessential" place of women in a man's world. But, a vast majority of us enjoy a lifestyle that's modern, confident and independent.

There has always been this ongoing debate about Feminism and the meaning of the word. Some live in the delusion that taking the male sex down is what feminism is all about. But that's not really it.
Feminism is just another term for Equality. Equality of both sexes. We don't want to make the men feel inferior. We just want to make them realise that we are not inferior either. We all are actually equal.

For me, fashion is a way of representing my strength, my confidence and my bold attitude. The clothes I wear and how I wear them, irrespective of people's reaction (at times) shows that I am an independent woman, who follows her own mind and not the dictates of a still-patriarchal society.

So, I'm always on the lookout for clothes and accessories that have a bold appeal. Fashion that makes a statement and gets you noticed when you step out.
TheJadeTree is one such brand that churns out bold, statement accessories for the head-strong, independent women of today. Kolkata-based designer Neha Sharma may have graduated in English from Delhi Universtity, but her passion lay in the creative field which led her to do a professional course in jewellery designing and manufacturing from the Indian Institute of Gem & Jewellery and post grads in Decorative Arts from Nottingham. She set up TheJadeTree in 2010 and there has been no looking back since then!
TheJadeTree is a couture art-jewellery house that specialises in opulent, statement pieces with high-fashion appeal. Neha draws inspiration from the nuances of contemporary life & culture and she uses softer & sustainable materials to create stunning, one-of-a-kind jewellery. Embroidered necklaces are this brand's USP and all the gorgeous creations are handmade by local craftsmen. Unique stones, crystals, acrylic, wood, metal trims and beads, along with rich fabrics, blend together to create TheJadeTree pieces that nothing less than art.

Neha's jewellery have been made for turning heads at gala events - from red carpet dos to the most happening parties to high-profile formal events. But, I chose to style her pieces with a street-chic casual look, thus bringing out the versatility of the products. The rock-chic appeal of the pieces I chose worked beautifully with the 90s grungy vibe of my layered outfit, making them blend in with a daytime look, while making me stand out!

For the shoot, I chose places that are the epitome of strength, if you ask me - one such place is the Calcutta High Court (which was, of course, deserted at 7am on a Sunday morning). The old, British architecture, the magnificent structure, the ornate columns, the resplendent archways; all represent strength & power like nothing else!

A memorialised war tank up in the middle of the army cantonment area seemed like another perfect representation of fearlessness, aggression and bold strength. A mere pose in front of this gigantic machine made me feel imbibed with power and energy!

Look at the melange of interesting elements that make up this TheJadeTree piece - stones, beads, crystals, spikes all nestled up harmoniously on a raw silk base.

Label alert: Suede by Devina Juneja

by , in
In case I have not made it clear to you guys till now, this post is yet another proof of how many talented designers and labels my home city, Kolkata, has to offer for the fashion-conscious generation of today!

When I was invited to a preview of Devina Juneja's latest collection of bags, I was not prepared for what met my eyes at her studio. Being someone who prides herself on knowing almost the majority of the design community of the city, I was totally taken aback by the fact that I was unaware of such a talented designer who churns out range after range of handcrafted leather goods that are luxurious, stylish & one-of-a-kind.

Suede by Devina Juneja turns out to be a brand that boasts of beautiful handbags (and also a few other accessories) designed by a talented woman & handcrafted by skilled artisans in pure leather. Devina's forte lies in the different textures she imparts to her designs - be it ruching, weaving, pleating or even stone-washing. She draws inspiration from her surroundings and uses creative techniques to create beautiful textures and classy designs.
A Suede bag is chic, classy, versatile & affordable too! What more can a woman want?

A cleansed soul & a new arm candy! {Style Prism x The BlingStreet}

by , in
Diwali, the festival of Lights, came & went.

We dressed up. We burst crackers. We ate good food & drank good wine. We gave gifts to near & dear ones. We celebrated & we enjoyed.

And we decked up our homes in all kinds of lights - string lights, rice lights, fancy lights, aromatic candles, pretty tea-lights and even the traditional diyas (or earthen lamps).
Our homes look their prettiest best during Diwali, coz before the festival we give it a good cleaning from head to toe and during the festival we dress it up in the finest lights!

This year I thought, if we can devote so much time, energy & effort in cleaning up our homes, we should also devote some of it for a bit of soul cleansing too! So, this season, I vowed to purge my soul of all negative vibes - bad feelings, harmful emotions, anger, hatred, jealousy - and emerge refreshed and full of positive thoughts, so that the lights all around me could illuminate my mind and make my soul sparkle!

Hence, when I was planning to shoot an outfit that I was going to wear to one of the festive dos, I (or rather, my photographer) thought of a Dhobi-Ghat as the location. After all, what better place than the working grounds of our washermen to shoot at, when I'm thinking soul-cleansing and mind-rejuvenating?
As someone had rightly said, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness"

This Diwali, I thought of ditching the ubiquitous ethnicwear for something fusion - this maxi dress with traditional kalamkari panels & sleeves has a chic contemporary silhouette with an ethnic twist and it just fit the bill. Luckily enough, my new bag from TheBlingStreet matched the dress to perfection and proved to be the ideal arm candy for my festive look!

This bag is from ANK, one of the brands stocking at TheBlingStreet and it is fast becoming my go-to choice for light occasions and festive events. ANK has got a tempting range of more such chic clutches in solid colours, tie-dye textures and even stunning embellishments that can make you stand out in the festive crowd!

TheBlingStreet.com is the new accessories shopping portal on the block and I must say they have an amazingly well-curated collection of products ranging from jewellery to shoes to bags to scarves from some very talented designers across the country!
The products are handpicked by Prachi Agarwal & Gunjan Agarwal - the two spunky ladies behind this venture - to make sure that they provide only classy & niche items to their buyers. The founders believe in curating a chic yet affordable range that which can fit into every fashionable girl's wardrobe.

Apart from being your one-stop accessories destination online, The BlingStreet is also popping-up at exhibition near you!
They recently held their first pop-up at Chorbazaar at The Oberoi Grand in Kolkata and what made the event more fun was the bloggers meet held at the pop-up by The BlingStreet in association with Style Prism!
Yes, you heard that right! Style Prism helped The BlingStreet organize a bloggers meet at their pop-up with a few of the eminent city bloggers and I can't even begin to tell you what fun it was!
The bloggers browsed through the stunning collection of accessories on display, interacted with the founders of the website, took innumerable selfies (complete with funky props) at the selfie booth and left with a goodie bag full of surprises!

Shoe Story I {Style Prism x Rohan Arora}

by , in
"I have enough shoes"
Said no girl ever.

At least not me.
I'm a BIG shoe lover. Make that huge, humongous, colossal.

I have a thing for shoes - pretty shoes, quirky shoes, cool shoes, bright shoes, glittery shoes and all other kinds in between.

So, when my city boasts of a fabulous young shoe designer, and when said designer happens to be a close friend, it was just a matter of time till I presented his work on the blog.
I met Rohan Arora at his very first Lakme Fashion Week outing, where he showed his funky debut collection, in 2010. We have been fast friends since then and I have seen this guy grow more amazing  at his work, each day for the past five years!

Rohan Arora shoes combine Indian tradition with contemporary aesthetics, resulting in pieces that are one of a kind and extremely covetable! The man behind the label may have studied commerce, but found his true calling in churning out pair after pair of unique shoes, that are fit to find pride of place in any stylish woman's shoe closet. Hand-painted Bollywood stars adorn his chicken leather booties, while hand-embroidered ornamentations are seen on silk-wrapped wedges. The expertise, craftsmanship and aesthetics have made this label the go-to choice for customized bridal footwear in the city.

Me and Nikita from Pen Twister decided to jointly collaborate with Rohan Arora and create an exciting series of stories for you guys!!
We are styling the same pair of shoes in our starkly different sensibilities and showing you how a Rohan Arora pair can equally complement a western attire, an ethnic ensemble and fusion outfits with effortless ease!!

Here's my first look - a layered western outfit worn with the quintessentially Indian pair of Rohan Arora hand-embroidered jootis! Over to the pictures!

Surprised at how effortlessly a pair of jootis is complementing a maxi dress and blazer combo?
Well, that's the beauty of Rohan Arora shoes.......they can turn any outfit into a style statement!

Nikita, on the other hand, wore her Rohan Arora pair in a contemporary ethnic look. Here's how she styled the same shoes! Check out her post for more pictures!!

I'll be back with yet another fusion look featuring these embroidered beauties!!

Till then, keep it stylish, fellas!!!
